Polyphasic Sleep Day 10 – Stacking Sleep

Intro to Polyphasic Sleep | First attempt (lasted 30 days) | Second Attempt (lasted 7 days) | Third Attempt (ongoing)

SlidingHey peeps! Day 10 today, I’m finally into the double digits! Early this morning I suffered through another day like yesterday, though I have come up with a battle plan to combat the tiredness. The cold air from outside seems to wake me up brilliantly, so I now open the house up when I start to feel tired. When I really need a kick I’ll jump on my rowing machine and do 5 minutes of fairly moderate exercise to get the heart rate pumping. I’ve also discovered eating a half-mouthful of chilli/hot mustard wakes me up almost instantly. Awesome.

I had another oversleep at 7-something in the morning. This time I overslept by an hour and a bit. I don’t think it mattered one way or the other; I woke up feeling no more or no less tired than after a normal 20 minute nap. I am concerned about how easily I slept through my alarm though. I have an alarm that requires you to answer maths problems in order to shut it off, however you can work around that by going into the task manager and shutting down the app. Despite having absolutely no memory of it, this morning when my alarm went off I somehow did that and then even managed to set myself another alarm to go off just over an hour later. Kinda weird…

The reason I overslept was because I’ve been really pushing the time between naps, especially late at night. The idea with the SPAMAYL schedule (the type of polyphasic sleep I’m doing) is that you’re supposed to sleep when you first feel tired, not when you’ve been tired for 3 hours and are starting to zonk out.

Tonight I pushed the time between naps to about 5 hours between naps, which is pretty fine. But I decided to do the sleep-stacking thing and had a nap, waited half an hour, had another nap, waited half an hour, etc until I’d had about 4 naps. Right now it’s 2am the next day and while I’m definitely tired, I’m nowhere near being a zombie; I’m still functional. Definitely feel better than some of the other days!

I’ve mentioned it a few times but I want to say it again because it’s so cool – I keep waking up after 20 minutes feeling like I’ve been asleep for several hours.Today I had my most complex dream ever. In the dream, time spanned an entire night, and I went from talking to a friend for what seemed like hours to going to a dinner party, then walking along the beach late at night and then talking to another friend for at least another “hour”. When my alarm woke me up 20 minutes after I’d gone to sleep, my head was absolutely spinning. How the heck could I possibly have fit all that in 20 minutes of napping? I could remember every vivid detail, every word that was spoken and every event that happened in that dream and there’s no way the events didn’t span at least 3 hours. How does the brain think all that in just 20 minutes? My brain must be working overdrive to think that quickly. Has this time-dilation thing ever happened to anyone else?

In other news, yesterday (or the day before, I’m losing track of days now that I don’t sleep in one big block!) I changed the theme of my website. I like it (obviously) but am interested to know what others think. Hate it? Love it? Drop me a message in the comments section below and let me know.

Peace out (are the kids still saying that? Sometimes I’m behind on trends.)
