Polyphasic Sleep v2 – Day 1

If you’re wondering why it’s taken me a couple of days to start Day 1 that’s because I’ve failed miserably the last few days. I’ve overslept at least once every day, often by 3 or 4 hours, and I’ve felt like hell after each nap. Many times I haven’t actually fallen asleep until almost 20 minutes into the nap, only to have my alarm go off 1 or 2 minutes later. Urgghh.

I think diet has been the deciding factor; I’d deviated from the raw fruit, veg and meat diet I was on and was consuming way too much sugar and other nasties. I kept crashing (hard) and found it almost impossible to wake up after each nap.

So I’m back on the good foods, I’ve got a few homemade fruit/veg juices in the freezer and I’m being super-strict with my nap times. I figure I’ll try to stick to the following times until I’m adapted again, and then I’ll allow myself a bit of freedom to move them around:

1am 4am 7am 10am 1pm 4pm 7pm 10pm

Each of the 8 naps will be 20 minutes, for a total of 160 minutes (2hrs 40minutes). Instead of trying to set an alarm for “25” or “30” minutes in order to account for “falling asleep time”, I’m just setting the alarm for 20 minutes and hoping I fall asleep quickly. Hopefully this will train my body to waste no time and go to sleep as soon as my head hits the pillow.

Obviously I’m calling today Day 1 (each day starting at midnight). I’ve stuck to the nap times pretty well but have felt like crap after every nap. Every bone in my body screams, “Go back to bed!” but I’m resisting that urge. Willpower will get me through the first few days until it becomes habit/lifestyle again.
